Technical snags delays flights than fog

Fog in the recent days saw many delays in departing flights from the IGI airport. However, not all of them were due to air traffic congestion or the fog. As many as 39 flights were delayed on 24th and 25th Dec due to technical snags and operational issues as compared to 15 fog-related delays.
According to sources from Delhi International Airport (P) Ltd (DIAL), several of these delays were due to reasons like a prolonged flight inspection, cleaning of the aircraft, late arrival of the food trays etc.
High alert announced on Tirupati airport

Since Tirupati airport has a strategic importance due to its proximity to SHAR at Sriharikota, NARL (National Atmospheric Research Laboratory) and Lord Venkateswara Temple in Tirumala, so security here, which falls under the purview of CISF, has been tightened after Mumbai terror episode.
35 non-metro airports to get modernized by 2009-10

The Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Mr. Praful Patel said that the program for upgradation and modernization of 35 non-metro airports is under way by Airports Authority of India and is likely to be completed by 2009-2010.
Karnataka airport projects put on backburner

Two proposed Greenfield airports project at Shimoga and Gulbarga in Karnataka have been put on hold for the next few months. The developers of the project including Hyderabad-based Nagarjuna Construction Company (NCC), along with partners, Maytas Infra (Maytas), and Austria-based Vienna International Airport (through VIE India Project Development & Holding LLC), have announced that they will evaluate the feasibility of both airports in the next nine months. Each of the airports was expected to cost around US$20.8 million to construct. In view of the current financial crisis, the partners are forced to put the execution of these projects on hold.
Net profit of Cochin International Airport rises up to 26%

The net profit of Cochin International Airport Ltd has grown by 26 % for the fiscal 2007-08.
According to Kerala Chief Minister and Chairman of CIAL, Mr. V.S. Achuthanandan, 61 % of the profits would be distributed back to the shareholders as dividend and the remaining 39 % would be used for the future growth of the airport.

Bengaluru International Airport inaugurates Cargo Village

Air India cuts fare from Jan 1

National carrier Air India has announced a fare reduction from Jan 1. According to a spokesperson, Air India will be adjusting domestic fares downwards on various sectors shortly in view of the continued decline in fuel prices. The announcement came from Air India a day after Kingfisher Airlines announced a fare cut.
Earlier, Kingfisher Airlines chairman, Mr. Vijay Mallya said that the airline would begin the New Year on an aggressive note by slashing fares.
ICAO shows drop in 2008 preliminary traffic figures

Preliminary traffic figures for 2008, released by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), shows a significant drop in growth with only a 1.8 % increase over 2007 in terms of Passenger Kilometers Performed (PKP). Passengers carried on scheduled air services increased by around 0.8 % in 2008 to 2.29 billion.

IndiGo announced to expand services

Jet Airways implements measures for winter

To minimize the troubles caused by the winter season, Jet Airways has introduced several new measures, which will lessen the passenger inconveniences caused due to flight disruptions and cancellations due to fog.
For example, in case of anticipated flight delays/cancellations, Jet Airways requests its passengers to check the status of their respective flights by calling Jet Airways' call centre. The airline also considers deploying additional aircraft for relief/additional flights, if required. Besides, Jet aims to provide regular flight updates to the electronic media throughout the day so as to constantly keep the passenger updated.
Emirates enters into new partnership with Jet Airways

Emirates Airline and Jet Airways have announced plans to enter a unilateral code share agreement and a reciprocal frequent flyer arrangement. British Airways introduces services to Hyderabad

British Airways has started operations to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad by providing a direct flight from Hyderabad to London Heathrow Terminal 5. Air India introduces promotion

Fuel surcharges reduced by Air India

Air India has announced to reduce fuel surcharge for all domestic sector flights by INR 400 with effect from 02-Dec-08. The average reduction in fuel surcharge now will be over 14.5%. The cut-back in fuel-surcharge is a consequence of the reduction in ATF prices from Sep-08 onwards, including the reduction announced by Oil Companies for Dec-08. The reduced fuel surcharge, which will come into effect for all sales in Air India made on or after 02-Dec-08, is expected to stimulate domestic air travel market during the peak winter season.
Economy hits Hind Aeronautics’ MRO project

Though the slowdown of the economy across sectors has not exactly hit Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) but it has put back the company’s planned civil aircraft repair project or MRO.
The initial plan of the company was to use part of the Bangalore’s old airport site as a facility for the maintenance, repair and overhaul of commercial aircraft. According to HAL’s Chairman, Mr. Ashok Baweja, because of the serious recession in the aviation sector, the company will start investing again later when it is viable.
GATI ltd. acquires 73.7% stake in cold chain logistics player

GATI has acquired 73.7% stake in Kausar India (Kausar), a Delhi-based cold chain logistics firm. Initially, the company acquired 52.96% stake in the company and later it came out with an open offer as per SEBI regulation and acquired another 20.76%.
As per the deal, the present management of Kausar would continue to run the operations under the guidance, supervision and support of GATI.

Aviation industry saw turbulent times

The Indian aviation industry faced turbulent times this year. Though, in the last few months things have certainly changed towards the positive as the year saw a mega alliance between Kingfisher Airlines and Jet Airways. Besides, nearly all domestic airlines reduced their fares.
After reducing fuel surcharge by Rs 550 per ticket last month, Kingfisher and Jet are considering another round of fare cuts. Both the airlines are now likely to reduce basic fares by Rs 600 per ticket from next month.
