Bengaluru International Airport receives new CEO

Mr. Marcel Hungerbuhler is the new CEO of Bengaluru International Airport Ltd. (BIAL) and will held office from 1 February 2009. He is succeeding Mr. Albert Brunner, who is quitting the high-profile seven year old post and has decided not to renew his contract Mr. Hungerbuhler, who has been associated with BIAL since 2006 as the Chief Operating Officer, is a veteran in the aviation industry. He has held top management positions with Swissair and Swissport previously.

Indira Gandhi International Airport to add special facilities for winter

The Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi has drawn up a new strategy to take special measures to avoid inconvenience caused by disruption of flights due to fog and low visibility in view of the oncoming winter season. The airport authority is going to provide several facilities like additional seating arrangements, additional food and beverage kiosks, extensive flight information display system, additional separate exit routes for passengers who want to avail pre-paid taxis and so on.

AAI informs the September 2008 traffic

The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has confirmed that during the month of September 2008, all operational airports in India together handled 102.73 thousand aircraft movements, 7.55 million passengers and 154.85 thousand tonnes of freight.

A marginal decrease of 1.8% has been registered on the total International and Domestic aircraft movements handled in September 2008 as compared to that of September 2007.

RGIA opens pre-paid taxi counters
19 November 2008


Two pre-paid taxi counters were inaugurated at the Hyderabad’s Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad to improve experience of passengers at the airport.

The counters are located at the arrival ramp of the Passenger Terminal Building (PTB) and the Public Transportation Centre (PTC). Passengers who want to use the taxi service will be issued a token by the pre-paid taxi personnel at the arrival ramp. From here, the passenger will be ferried in the free shuttle bus to the Public Transportation Centre where the pre-paid vehicles queue up.

BIA celebrates 6 months of completion of its operation

Opened in the month of May 2008, the Bengaluru International Airport announces the completion of six months of its airport operations. On the occasion, BIAL CEO, Mr. Albert Brunner shared data, facts and figures of the airport with the media.

He further said that he is glad to have established the success of this new airport with data supporting its operational efficiency.

Rajiv Gandhi Airport in Hyderabad gets a Fish Reflexology Centre

The Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Hyderabad has received a Fish Reflexology Centre. The O2 Spa offers facilities like massages, pedicures, manicures and facials.

The opening of the new spa will offer new opportunity for passengers to enhance their airport experience by de-stressing and rejuvenating self in the cool environs of the airport.

Mumbai Airport opens new taxiway

A new taxiway N9 has been inaugurated at the Mumbai International Airport on 1 November 2008. The taxiway has been designed to facilitate all wide-body aircraft to vacate the runway after landing.

Rajiv Gandhi Airport conducts orientation program for concessionaires

To improve passenger experience, Rajiv Gandhi International Airport plans to conduct customer orientation program for concessionaires. The program is aimed at inculcating the spirit of customer service among its stakeholders so that passengers can experience higher service level excellence. The program includes providing tourism information and details on the features and facilities at RGIA. The orientation program will be conducted in three languages, Telugu, Hindi and Urdu and aims to involve over 2500 stakeholders over the next three-four months.

GMR Infrastructure receives new company secretary

The Board of Directors of GMR Infrastructure Ltd has approved the resignation of Mr. Adiseshavataram Cherukupalli as Company Secretary and has appointed Mr. C P Sounderarajan as the new Company Secretary of the Company with effect from 1 November 2008.

IATA welcomes AERA bill
4 November 2008


The International Air Transport Association (IATA) welcomed the passing of the Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) bill by both houses of the Indian Parliament.

AERA’s role is to ensure that India’s aviation infrastructure meets cost-efficiency and service-level targets with charging policies in line with ICAO principles.

Air India removes transaction fee
27 November 2008


Air India announced to withdraw transaction fee for tickets sold through its booking offices, its website and its Call Centres. With this announcement, the Air India tickets will now get cheaper with effect from 26 November 2008.

Jet Airways announces to re-start Chennai-Coimbatore services
26 November 2008


The Jet Airways has announced to re-launch its services on the Chennai-Coimbatore route with effect from 1 December 2008. The airline will commence daily flights on the sector aboard its ATR 72-500 aircraft. The Flight number 9W 3570 will depart Chennai at 1125 hours and arrive Coimbatore at 1235 hours, whereas on the return journey, flight number 9W 3571 will depart Coimbatore at 1305 hours and arrive Chennai at 1415 hours.

Paramount Airways launches Chennai-Pune services

Paramount Airways has started its Western India service by launching its daily flights from Chennai to Pune. As per the company MD, Mr. Thiagarajan the extension of this flight service is a part of their expansion strategy.

Earlier, Paramount Airways has introduced its Western India service by launching its daily flights from Chennai to Goa.

Jet Airways re-launches Bengaluru-Mangalore services

Jet Airways announced to restart its service on the Bengaluru-Mangalore-Bengaluru sectors. The daily flight service will start with effect from 1 December 2008. Jet Airways further announced to enhance its services to and from Pune and Bengaluru effective from 1 December 2008.

Jet Airways gets positive nod to undertake performance based navigation

Jet Airways has become the first airline in India to receive the regulatory approval for the use of RNAV1 (Area Navigation) across its entire jet aircraft fleet. This is the recent development that took place after the subsequent introduction of the Performance Based Navigation (PBN) procedures in India. Jet Airways has also become the first airline in India to have obtained regulatory approval for the conduct of RNP 0.3 approaches at applicable airfields.

Etihad Airways’ VP receives top Aviation Award

Jet introduced special fares for Europe
13 November 2008


Jet Airways has introduced special fares to several destinations across Europe, via its European hub in Brussels, and London, over the winter holiday season. The special fares are being offered in association with Jet Airways’ interline partner carriers and will be valid for sale and travel with immediate effect. These fares may also be availed of by Jet Airways’ Delhi/Mumbai passengers traveling to London Heathrow.

India can take over China in civil aircraft manufacturing

As per the European Representative of ACAC, Mr. Peter Klonk, India has the capability of overtaking China in the civil aircraft production if it moves fast. Mr. Klonk said that India enjoyed several advantages over China which can be leveraged to its advantage in civil aircraft manufacturing.

Founded in September 2002, ACAC is the Chinese state-owned civilian jet manufacturing company headquartered at Shanghai.

Jet Airways and United Airlines to form frequent flyer partnership

Jet Airways has forged a frequent flyer partnership with United Airlines with effect from 15 November 2008. This partnership will enable JetPrivilege members of Jet Airways earn and redeem JPMiles on the entire global network of United Airlines. Likewise, Mileage Plus members of United Airlines can earn and redeem their miles on Jet Airways’ network. This partnership will also enable the passengers of both carriers to tap into their respective international networks.

Jet Airways provides double mileage points on India-London sector

Members of Jet Airways’ JetPrivilege, India’s frequent flyer program can now earn Double JPMiles (mileage points) between 6 November 2008 and 15 January 2009 by traveling on the Mumbai/Delhi-London sectors. The Double JPMiles will be eligible for flights booked in First Class, Premiere and Economy, enabling JetPrivilege members to earn over 25,000 JPMiles on a return First Class ticket booked for the London route.

Mumbai, the first destination of Sama Airlines in India

Sama Airlines of Saudi Arabia announced the addition of Mumbai as their first destination in India and the 11th international destination. The airline will operate 3 times a week on the route and has already commenced its first flight on 12 November 2008 from Dammam to Mumbai.

Jet Airways connects Bengaluru with New York and Toronto via Brussels

Because of the higher holiday season passenger traffic, Jet Airways has announced to connect Bengaluru with New York and Toronto, via its European hub in Brussels through its four weekly flights on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays respectively.

Emirates to expand additional services to India
3 November 2008


Emirates will be adding 31 weekly flights to its existing service in India between now and Feb-09. The expansion will be implemented in a phased manner and key cities - Mumbai and New Delhi. Commercial hubs including Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad and Kochi will also be served with additional frequencies. The additional frequencies will offer passengers with more consistent schedules and seamless connections to onward destinations in Europe, the Americas, Africa and the Middle East.

Airlines to charge additional fee for direct booking too

Air India, Jet Airways and Kingfisher, India’s three full service airlines, have started charging a transaction surcharge on tickets sold by them. This surcharge is similar to the fee that agents now charge.

CAPA to set up US$250 million venture fund

Aviation consultancy firm CAPA (Centre for Asia-Pacific Aviation) is setting up a venture fund worth US$250 million for investments into general aviation sector. The firm is also raising an equal amount for some of its clients who are planning to set up a regional airport and an aviation school. CAPA is also planning to set up a 70-acre aero park either in Navi Mumbai or in Bangalore with an investment of around US$100 million.

Air Works has become the first commercial airline MRO

Aviation services provider, Air Works has become the first Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) approved commercial-airline maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) operator in India.

As per Air Works’, chief executive officer, Mr. Fredrik Groth, the company is beginning with airframes MRO that requires the least technical and engineering prowess, but will soon move to component and engineering MRO services also.

Foreign air cargo players optimistic about industry

With international airlines increasing their capacities into the Indian market, the air cargo movement in the country is also going to gain momentum. Carriers like Emirates are expanding services to India in cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai and Kochi in a phased manner and are also offering onward connections from the Gulf. Consequently, air Cargo capacity is also expected to increase.

Egypt Air, British Airways and some carriers from China are also expected to increase their connections to India.

All these capacity expansion program of airlines are making it quite evident for industry sources to expect that air cargo movement will gain momentum and will support export of different products to Middle East, Africa, Europe and America.

Besides, several established dedicated cargo carriers are also increasing capacity to India as per aviation sources.

India signs revised bilateral air services agreement with Malaysia
18 November 2008


Delegations representing the Government of India and the Government of Malaysia met in New Delhi to discuss the changes that are required to be updated and modernized in the existing Air Services Agreement between the two countries.

The two countries have agreed that the designated airlines of each country shall be entitled to operate 20,410 seats per week in each direction on the routes specified in the respective Route Schedule with effect from summer 2009.

Government supports Horizontal Agreement signed between India and EU
3 November 2008


The Government has given approval to the signing of Horizontal Agreement for air services between India and the European Commission. The Horizontal Agreement was signed between India and the European Commission on 28 September 2008 in Marseilles, France. Prior approval of the Prime Minister under Rule 12 of the TOB Rules was taken before the signing.

Government agrees to the new air services agreement between India and Iran
3 November 2008


After bilateral talks on 29 -30 April 2008 in New Delhi, the Government has agreed to sign a new and more liberalized Air Services Agreement (ASA) between India and Iran. A MoU was also signed during these bilateral air services consultations. The new ASA is based on the ICAO template and is in line with India's liberalization in the air transport sector. The existing agreement was initialed on 10-Jun-80.
